A collaborative team led by Prof. Hongbin Liu, an affiliated member of Hong Kong Branch of the Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory (Guangzhou), discovered distinct interaction effects of global warming and anthropogenic input on two common microalgae in Pearl River Estuary (PRE). By analyzing an 18-year monthly monitoring dataset (2000– 2017) in PRE, this team shows that the ratio between diatom and dinoflagellate (dino) has been nearly doubled in this area over the past two decades. The result indicates that the abundance of diatom may be due to the change of nutrient composition in the PRE, arising from the increasing anthropogenic input and global warming. The research model sheds light on prediction and even prevention of future blooms. The research findings have been published in the scientific journal Global Change Biology in May 2021. Read more
